Distribution

Central to Northern China, Manchuria and Japan.

Habit

Large shrub or small tree, open upright main branches, becoming wide-spreading with age with thin, hanging branches.

Size

5 to 7 m in height and 4.5 to 8 m in spread. Very old specimens will grow even wider. Annual growth 35 cm in height, 35 to 40 cm spread.

Bark

Young winter shoots red-brown where exposed to the sun, often grey on the shade side, two year old branches are light brown, later turning grey-brown.

Leaves

Deciduous, opposite, 4 to 8 cm long, generally 3-lobed, occasionally entire. Autumn colour bright, fiery red to dark red.

Flowers

Green-white, in umbels appearing in May.

Fruits

Winged fruits generally held in parallel pairs, bright red.

Roots

Shallow, wide spreading and dense root system.

Site

Sun/partial shade.

Soil

No special requirements, dry to moist, intolerant of excessive lime and poor drainage.

Characteristics

Very tolerant of frost, smoke, heat, wind and urban sites.

Utilisations

Solitary, formal hedge, ornamental tree.
