Habit
Magnificent large tree with a symmetrical conical crown and a straight single leading stem. Fast growing.
Size
30 to 35 (40) m in height and 12 to 18 (20) m in spread. Annual growth is ca. 40 cm in height and ca. 25 to 30 cm spread.
Bark
Shoots and buds are conspicuously red in autumn.
Leaves
Deciduous, alternate, oblique cordate, larger than in T. x intermedia, base of leaf is horizontal, vivid green, slightly glossy. Autumn colour is yellow, long lasting.
Flowers
Yellow, in umbel-like inflorescences, scented; June/July.
Fruits
Gray-green, round fruits by September.
Roots
Shallow root system, predominantly horizontally spreading with dense fibrous roots, intense root formation in the top soil layer (see T. cordata).

Sunny.
Soil
On nutrient-rich, deep, moderately dry to moist soils, best on moist, mildly acid to alkaline sites.
Characteristics
Frost tolerant, prefers warmth, withstands temporary drought, urban sites, good re-growth from old wood, wind resistant, early into leaf. T. x intermedia ‘Pallida’ is more similar to T. cordata than T. platyphyllos. Leaves have reflective properties, preventing dust from sticking, reducing heating of leaves and evaporation. Well suited to urban street spaces.
