Distribution

Europe, east to the Ural, south to Caucasus, Asia Minor and Northern Persia. In mixed forests on moist, nutrient- and humus-rich soils.

Shoots

Light brown shoots.

Habit

Large tree with round, dense crown, when grown on open site becomes spreading and densely branching. Very attractive habit.

Size

20 to 30 m in height and 15 to 22 m (unrestricted) spread. Annual growth 45 to 60 cm in height, 30 to 40 cm spread, more in young plants.

Bark

Light brown branches, winter buds red to dark purple (green in A. pseudoplatanus!), bark is brown-black with vertical splits.

Leaves

Deciduous, opposite, 20 cm wide, 5 to 7 lobes, arching toothed, has latex sap. Autumn colour is intense golden-yellow, often with red blotches.

Flowers

Golden-yellow upright, terminal corymbs appearing before leafing-out. Flower­ing trees are very beautiful.

Fruits

Winged fruit held at obtuse angles to nearly horizontal, brown.

Roots

Shallow root system, predominantly horizontally spreading with many fibrous roots.

Site

Sun/partial shade.

Soil

No special requirements, tolerates all types of soils, slightly acid to alkaline but fails on moorlands and peaty sites.

Characteristics

Wild form is more hardy than varieties. Heat tolerant, extremely tolerant of dry conditions, wind tolerant, withstands shade, tolerant of urban sites.

Utilisations

Solitary.
