In Sweden raised from seeds collected on the South Korean island Ulleungdo in 1976. Dodong is the name of the island’s harbour town.

Korea, Sakhalin, Japan.
Habit
Small to medium-sized, columnar, multi-stemmed large shrub or small tree.
Size
6 to 8 (10) m in height and 3 to 4 m in spread.
Bark
Young shoots are red-brown, mature bark is grey-brown, smooth.
Leaves
Deciduous, alternate, 20 to 30 cm long and to 20 cm wide, imparipinnate, 15 to 17 leaflets, 4 to 8 cm long, elliptic-lanceolate, long pointed, sharply serrate, early leafing-out, juvenile foliage is brownish, later dark green, slightly glossy; magnificent autumn colour ranging from dark yellow, vivid orange to fiery red.
Flowers
White, loose inflorescences, 8 to 12 cm wide, glabrous, May / June.
Fruits
Scarlet, spherical, pea-sized, held on the tree late into autumn.

Sun / partial shade
Soil
On all well-drained, not too moist, nutrient-rich soils, moderately alkaline to acid.
Characteristics
Tolerant of frost, this selection is still not widely used, medium strong annual growth, striking autumn colour and vibrant colour of fruit.
